You can often hear that the blue filter is good for the eyes and overall health. Is it so? Such a filter is increasingly appearing on computers, and even camera manufacturers are not far behind – but why?
Blue light filter: is it good?
In the modern world, more and more blue light is found, for example, in displays, as well as in LEDs and energy-saving lamps. Blue light itself is not harmful: in nature, we see it as often as in gadgets. Previously, it was even used to treat depression as a natural antidepressant.
However, this mood-enhancing factor can also be a problem for you if you intend to go to bed in the evening. The human body is highly dependent on light. When the sun sets, the hormone melatonin begins to be produced, which leads to falling asleep. The blue light in the displays is very bright for the human eye, it signals the body that it is too early to sleep.

If even after sunset you are still exposed to blue light, your body does not begin to secrete melatonin, causing you to stay awake. Studies have shown: those who use a phone or tablet for a long time just before bedtime need more time to fall asleep (25 minutes) than representatives of the control group who read books (15 minutes).
Is there any benefit from filters, and how much is blue light harmful to the eyes?
On the mobile phone, blue filters serve to reduce the proportion of blue light. Similar filters exist both for smartphones on Android, and for iPhones. But how necessary is that? There are international standards for the proportion of blue light on the screens, but for a mobile phone display, this value is about a hundred times lower. Even scientists who analyzed the benefits of lenses for glasses with a blue light filter, in practice, could not find a positive effect on eye health.
But can blue light lead to sleep disturbances?
The effectiveness of blue filters for the prevention of sleep disorders has not been proven. Some studies show that blue light produces less melatonin than normal light. Practical studies have been conducted that prove this fact, but there have been other studies that have failed to establish such a relationship.
Therefore, further large-scale research is necessary. But one thing is clear – a smartphone or tablet emits more light than a reading lamp, and therefore, after sticking to gadgets, we stay awake longer.
From a scientific point of view, it can be argued that using a blue light filter, even if its effectiveness has not yet been fully proven, makes sense, at least before bedtime. In any case, it will not be worse.
On most phones, the blue filter can be turned on in the settings. This is often referred to as night mode or vision protection mode. It is best to set it so that it correlates with sunrise and sunset. If you are using a smartphone that does not yet have a blue light filter, there are many applications, such as Twilight for Android, that will create it for you.
