Google abandoned
Google is constantly faced with some troubles that force it to urgently make unpopular decisions. Moreover, in most cases, the company becomes their culprit, driving itself into one or another framework. The most striking example is the naming of new versions of Android, which Google for almost a dozen years called by the name of some dessert, starting with one of the letters of the Latin alphabet. Everything went as usual until Google got to the letter Q, to come up with which sweetness is that still a task.

Today, Google announced that it will abandon the previous policy of naming new versions of Android by the names of sweets. Moreover, from now on, the company will not use the letters of the Latin alphabet at all, leaving only numbers. As a result, Android Q, which is currently in beta testing, will be called Android 10. In this case, Google even drew a new logo.

What will be called Android Q
The position of the company itself regarding changing the policy for naming new versions of Android is quite interesting. According to Samir Samat, Google’s vice president of product, in fact, marketers could continue to list updates alphabetically. For example, Google until the last moment planned to name Android 10 either Queens cake or Quindim (a popular in Brazil baked dessert made from sugar, egg yolks and ground coconut).
The true reason why Google has decided to switch to serial numbers is utterly banal. The fact is that due to cultural differences, what is considered a dessert in one country can be perceived as a snack, a delicacy, and even a second dish in another.

Using simple letters of the Latin alphabet without interpretations also proved impossible – due to difficulties in pronunciation, Samat admits. For example, users from Asian countries find it difficult to distinguish the sound “R” from the sound “L”, simply because there are no such letters in their alphabets. Therefore, in order to avoid further confusion, it was decided to use a universal solution – to start numbering the updates in order, as all other manufacturers do.
Despite the fact that such a transition has been asking for a long time, today we all have lost something close and even native. It would seem, well, why is there such a thing – just names by the names of sweets. But Google managed to turn this into a full-fledged campaign that captivated millions of operating system fans around the world, making them wonder what the search giant would call the update next year. I do not like this phrase, but today a whole era has passed.
